NPP govt NEVER implemented betting tax - Former Finance Minister Amin Adam
Former Finance Minister Amin Adam has categorically denied that the thenNew Partricoic Party [NPP] implemented the 10% betting tax on sports winnings.His remarks follow aftercurrent Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said the 10% betting tax will be abolished while reading the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policyon the floor of parliament on Tuesday, March 11.We will abolish the 10% withholding tax on winnings from lottery, otherwise known as the Betting Tax', he said.In addition to the betting tax, the E-levy, Covid tax, and emission levy have all been abolished.However, Amin Adam, addressing the media after the reading of the budget, challenged AtoForsons narrative, insisting that the betting tax was never implemented bythe previous government.Ladies and gentlemen, we never collected or implemented the betting tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something we never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana, he stated.The betting tax was introduced in 2023, but prior to the 2024 elections, John Mahama and the NDC pledged to abolish it should he win the elections.The 10% abolishment of the betting tax is expected to resonate with many young Ghanaians who rely on gambling as a viable source of income, particularly in a tough job market where employment opportunities are scarce.
