Tottenham Hotspur were hassled and harried by Swansea City's in-form Jordan Ayew on Wednesday night - if only he'd performed like this for Aston Villa.
Jordan Ayew has not have scored a single Premier League goal in his seven appearances for Swansea City.
But, as Paul Clement’s side gave Tottenham Hotspur an almighty scare before eventually losing 3-1 on Wednesday night, it’s testament to the Ghanaian that he at least limited the effect of Fernando Llorente’s injury-enforced absence.
Not completely of course.
The Spaniard is not only Swansea’s main forward threat and their top scorer but he would also have been an excellent outball against a dominant Tottenham side, his strength and hold-up play giving some relief to his embattled team-mates.
Yet, Ayew did everything asked of him at the Liberty Stadium in his most eye-catching performance in Swansea colours, setting up Wayne Routledge’s early opener following a clever run into the channel, a step-over to bamboozle Ben Davies and an accurate driven cross.
And although he lacks the stature of the 6ft 5ins Llorente, the 25-year-old did whatever he could to make himself a nuisance to the Premier League’s most impenetrable backline.
If Aston Villa fans were watching, they would have wondered aloud why Ayew did not perform with the same determination and spirit in the first-half of the season.
The versatile attacker may have been one of the brightest sparks in Villa’s dismal relegation season but he failed to produce in the Championship, scoring just two goals and producing four assists before gradually losing his place under Steve Bruce.
In the end, Villa jumped at the chance to swap him with Swansea left-back Neil Taylor, and £5 million, on transfer deadline day, as reported by The Sun.
And while the claret and blue’s terrific recent run means they won’t be losing sleep over his departure, it may pain supporters to see Ayew proving he’s far more than just a luxury player in South Wales.
