Skipper of Ghana Black Stars Asamoah Gyan says the appointment of Kwesi Appiah is a chance to start afresh for everyone involved with the national team after the disappointments and frustrations of the past.
Appiah was appointed as the new head coach of the Black Stars by a six member committee set up by the Ghana Football Association to find a replacement for Avram Grant, who left after the expiration of his contract in February.
The ex-Ghana international will be making a second attempt at the national team job after his previous stint lasted for two years (2012-2014).
The man known by close friends as the “silent killer” will be tasked with weaving his magic again to get Ghana reach the World Cup in Russia after a disastrous start to the qualifying campaign that has seen the Stars cop just a point from their first two games.
“I think that this is a new era and we all have to support him because he is one of our own,” Asamoah Gyan told Accra-based Hot fm
“The Ghana Football Association has made their call and it’s a man who has managed the team before so we all have to be positive and help him succeed for us.”
“I am yet to speak to my colleagues in the national team but I am sure they have heard and that we will all be looking forward with optimism.”
The departing Al Khartoum boss’s first game will be against Ethiopia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium, coincidentally the very venue hosted his last home game before he was fired in 2014.
