Alavanyo (VR), Nov. 12, GNA - The chiefs and people of Alavanyo in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region have honoured Mamaga Akosua I, Paramount Queen Mother of SASADU for her continued contribution to education, health and the socioeconomic development of people in the traditional area.
This was after Mamaga Akosua, a German, known in private life as Cornelia Von Wuelfing commissioned a six unit classroom block she built for Alavanyo-Kpeme Roman Catholic Basic School with support from donors in Germany and the German Embassy in Accra.
The classroom block, which replaces a makeshift one relocated on the outskirt of the town, near Nkonya, to avoid possible “attacks on the pupils,” has ancillary facilities including a computer laboratory, toilets and staffrooms.
The SASADU is a union among the people of Saviefe, Akrofu, Sovie and Alavanyo communities.
Mamaga Akosua, who is also the Ngoryinyornufiaga (Development Queenmother) of Alavanyo, said the project was part of her efforts at building peace between Alavanyo and Nkonya, after she introduced school feeding and other community development projects in both traditional areas to cement peace processes aimed at ending the about a century old land dispute between the two areas.
She said there could not be development without peace and charged women in the two traditional areas to lead the path for peace in their communities through joint self-help projects.
Mamaga Akosua said her next project would be women empowerment to prepare them to take up leadership roles and develop their communities and stop over dependent on government for basic amenities.
A citation signed by Togbega Tsedze-Atakora VII, Paramount Chief of Alavanyo commended Mamaga Akosua for bringing “untold joy and dignity” to the people of Alavanyo through the projects.
One of the four donors, who wants to be known only as Tom, said he was happy his support had brought smiles on faces of the people and described the community's celebration of the facility and the donors as "awesome."
Mr Teddy Ofori, Municipal Chief Executive of Hohoe, commended Mamaga Akosua for her meritorious services to SASADU, especially Alavanyo, saying the classroom block was timely as the Assembly was ensuring that all children of school going age were in school.
Togbega Tsedze-Atakora said the project had changed the face of Alavanyo-Kpeme and expressed the hope that it would appeal to pupils to stay in school.
The gated classroom block is christened, Niklas and Basti R.C. Basic School.
