Nkoranza, (B/E), April 02, GNA - Aggrieved personnel of the Nkoranza Municipal Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) allegedly stormed a local radio station and subjected sports presenters and reporters to severe beatings.
The atmosphere at Dero radio, Nkoranza-based FM station in the newly created Bono East Region, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered was crowded as people rushed in to catch a glimpse of the scene.
But, the intervention of bystanders saved the situation.
Seven presenters and reporters of the station were brutally assaulted by the uniformed firemen when the incident happened around 1030 hours.
The about six fire personnel allegedly caused extensive damage to some studio machines and other properties at the station.
GNA investigations revealed that the action of the fire fighters followed a distress call the service received from the radio station which turned to be April, 1, "prank".
A caller has earlier phone-in to the sports show and raised a false alarm about a fatal accident that has happened on the Nkoranza-Donkro-Nwanta road in the Municipality.
Because of the impact and fatality of the purported crash, the radio station could not crosscheck further and subsequently relay the information to the fire command which rushed personnel to the scene.
On reaching the scene, the fire fighters discovered all what they went through was a "prank", and infuriated by the false alarm they stormed the station and vented their anger on reporters.
As at filing this report the GNA gathered the Nkoranza Municipal Security Council was meeting on the matter.
