Nsuta (W/R), April 2, GNA - The Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMCL) has cut the sod for work to commence on the second phase of the Nsuta road in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality.
The project which would take three months to complete is being sponsored by GMCL with a sum of GH¢3.9 million.
Addressing the media, Mr. Steve Ofori, Engineering Manager for GMCL, indicated that the second phase of the 1.883 kilometres roadproject was a promise made to some communities in the firms’ operational area.
Mr. Ofori explained that the project has delayed because a new management took over the company and they had go through their operations.
The project, being implemented by Asabea Engineering Construction Limited, involves an asphaltic overlay, bridges, crush barriers, drainage systems, gutters, speed ramps, road markings and erecting of sign post.
He noted that even though the width of the trunk road is eight metres GMCL together with the Municipal urban roads department in Tarkwa Nsuaem have opted for 12 meters, adding that the actual usage of the road would be lesser.
In addition, Mr. Ofori said due to the heavy loads that the haulage trucks from GMCL convey, they would use pavement blocks instead of bitumen at the entrance of Nsuta junction to sustain the road.
The engineering manager, beseeched traditional rulers and the youth in Tamso and its surrounding communities to support the contractor for the successful completion of the project.
Mr. Derrick Obeng, Municipal Urban Roads Engineer added that the road has already been sealed.
"The usual tickness of an asphaltic overlay is 50 millimetres but because of the loadings from manganese trucks we have increased the thickness of the Nsuta road to 75 millimeters" he noted.
Mr. Obeng was hopeful that with the new input the road would last for 20 years.
Mr. Samuel Ofori Larbi, Managing Director of Asabea Engineering Construction Limited, pledged to discharge quality work and finish the work on time.
