SARI organise blood donation exercise

Nyankpala (NR), July 13, GNA - The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research/ Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR/SARI), in partnership with the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), has organised a blood donation exercise among its staff to stock the Blood Bank in the Hospital.

The staff of the CSIR-SARI, the CSIR-Water Research Institute (WRI) and the CSIR-Animal Research Institute (ARI) and members of the public, participated in the exercise. 

The exercise was part of the Council’s 60th anniversary celebration, which is on the theme: “CSIR 60 Years of Research with Impact for Sustainable Development”.

Dr Stephen Nutsugah, the Director of the CSIR-SARI, disclosed that the exercise was the first to be held by the Institute, and that, it was part of the efforts to contribute to saving lives by augmenting the Blood Bank in the Hospital, to improve the healthcare delivery.

He said most hospitals across the country had been hit with cases of blood shortage and it was therefore, necessary to organize the exercise, to help reduce the problem in the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Dr Roger Kanton, the Deputy Director and Chief Research Scientist of CSIR-SARI, called on the youth to voluntarily donate blood to replenish the blood banks of hospitals to help save lives.

 He said road accidents, amongst other emergencies had become widespread in the nation, and that, victims needed blood transfusion for survival and stressed the need for the youth to participate in such exercises.  

Dr Kanton appealed to the government and corporate bodies to provide incentive packages to blood donors in order to motivate them to donate regularly.

Madam Mercy Asare Bediako, the Principal Blood Organizer at the TTH, expressed gratitude to the CSIR-SARI for the kind gesture and appealed to other corporate institutions to emulate the effort of the Institute.
