Sunyani, Mar. 26, GNA – Two school children from the Holy Spirit Preparatory and Junior High School (JHS) in Sunyani were at the weekend crowned the ultimate winners of the MTN Ghana Foundation Essay competition.
Ms Adwoa Anima Antwi-Boasiako and Martina Twumasi won the JHS and Primary School categories of the competition respectively, and they received laptop computer and phone tablet, MTN souvenirs, in that order.
They entered the competition with 38 other students and pupils, 20 in each category drawn from selected basic schools in five communities in the region.
MTN Ghana Foundation, a subsidiary of MTN Ghana, a giant telecommunication company in the country launched the five-month competition in the Brong-Ahafo Region in September 2017.
It was aimed at helping to ignite the passion and love for reading in basic schools.
Remit Duut, a JHS student from Solomon Bennett Preparatory and JHS in Sunyani, emerged second in the JHS category of the competition, and received a phone tablet and some MTN souvenirs as prize.
All the competitors who were charged to read story books and do oral summary received consolation prizes, MTN souvenirs, school bags and other educational materials.
Later in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ebenezer Terkpeh, the Education Portfolio Adviser of MTN Ghana Foundation, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the school children.
He explained that 100 pupils and students between eight and 14 years, who were poor readers, were selected to participate in the competition.
Mr. Terkpeh said the selection of the participants was done in consultation with heads and teachers of the beneficiary schools.
He expressed worry about the poor reading habit of many pupils and students in public basic schools, indicating that the competition was to whip up the enthusiasm of the students in reading.
Mr. Terkpeh advised parents to assist and encourage their children to read story books and monitor the television viewing content of their children as well.
He said the Foundation would consider replicating the competition in other schools depending on the impact the competition would have on the readers.
