Tema, March 26,GNA - Five persons sustained various degrees of injury on the premises of Rider Steel Company in the Tema Free Zones enclave when a furnace firing at full blast broke and spewed molten on them.
Confirming the accident to the Ghana News Agency, Doctor Stephen Ankamah-Lomotey, Tema Metropolitan Director, Department of Factories Inspectorate, said,” The Rider Steel Company has reported the accident to us and we have investigated it.”
According to him, it was found out that a combustible material had found its way into the furnace resulting in the blast.
“These furnaces which could hold temperatures beyond 1000 degrees Celsius, are fed with metal scraps so if meticulous sorting is not done and some combustible material finds its way into it, then we have a problem because the pot is already prepared for an explosion,” he said.
Madam Henrietta Nyarko, Human Resource Manager, Rider Steel Company Limited, told the Ghana News Agency, in an interview that the five injured workers were responding to treatment in a health facility in Tema.
She said the company which relied heavily on outsourced workers, was paying the bills of the injured.
Rider Steel Company Limited experienced a bizarre accident in 2017, when a worker was trapped and electrocuted in high tension electrical conductors on the company’s premises.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the worker remain a mystery as investigations by all concerned authorities were yet to reach a logical conclusion.
Meanwhile, some workers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency under the rule of anonymity, complained of poor health and safety standards at the plant.
