Ghana Parliament approves GH¢4.7b for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs

Parliament has approved GH¢4.7 billion estimate for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2026. 

The allocation is expected to strengthen the Ministry’s mandate in promoting decentralisation, addressing chieftaincy matters, and managing religious affairs, which are considered vital for sustaining peace, harmony, and national cohesion. 

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Sector Minister, welcomed the approval during Wednesday’s sitting, noting that the funds would enable the Ministry to deepen local governance structures, resolve traditional leadership disputes, and foster interfaith dialogue across the country. 

“This investment underscores government’s commitment to building strong local institutions, preserving our cultural heritage, and ensuring religious harmony,” Mr. Ibrahim stated. 

The Ministry plays a central role in coordinating policies that empower local assemblies, mediate chieftaincy conflicts, and promote peaceful coexistence among diverse religious groups.

The lawmakers emphasised that the approved estimates would help advance Ghana’s decentralisation agenda while safeguarding traditions and values that bind communities together.
