The Asokwa Circuit Court has sentenced a commercial motorcycle rider captured on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) stealing from a shop to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Emmanuel Asamoah, 22, admitted that he unlawfully entered the shop of Madam Ama Kyerewaa to steal GH¢80,000.
Presiding Judge Mr Fred Obikyere considered that Asamoah was young, a first-time offender, had admitted his offence without wasting the Court’s time, and had made part payment of the amount with a pledge to pay GH¢55,000 as the balance.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Ofori told the Court that Madam Kyerewaa, a midwife resident at Aputuogya, owned Amful Metal shop at Suame-Magazine, Kumasi, together with her husband, Mr Ransford Fosu, who was the witness in the case.
He stated that Asamoah, a tricycle (Aboboyaa) rider from Old Suame, frequently parked in front of the shop while waiting to transport customers’ metal pipes.
On October 31, 2025, at about 1600 hours, the complainant detected that GH¢9,000 had been stolen from her handbag left in the shop.
She immediately searched all workers and their belongings but found nothing incriminating.
ASP Ofori said the complainant reviewed CCTV footage and saw Asamoah stealing cash from her handbag and a drawer in the shop.
A complaint was lodged with the Police, leading to his arrest.
During investigations, the convict admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and confessed to stealing a total of GH¢80,000 over two months.
An amount of GH¢20,000 was recovered from him during investigations. He was subsequently charged and arraigned before the Court.
