?Mr Philip Gamey, Executive Chairman of the Hallmark Research, speaking at the ceremony, said, “This isn’t just the signing of a document; it’s the inauguration of a shared future in line with the Presidential Special Initiative on Artificial Intelligence.
“It’s a moment that, I believe, will be looked back upon as a pivotal step in the journey of artificial intelligence.”?
?He said through the collaboration, a significant investment of $240 million would be committed from Hallmark Research Lab over the next ten years.
That, he stressed, would bring together the brightest minds from both industry and the university and give them the resources and the freedom to explore the uncharted territories of AI.?
Mr Gamey said, “AI is reshaping industries, redefining how we work, live, and interact in the world.” But to truly unlock its full potential, to ensure it serves humanity ethically and effectively, we can’t do it alone.
“We need the deep scientific inquiry, the rigorous academic freedom, and the diverse perspectives that only a partnership like this can provide.
“That’s why the UPSA and Hallmark Research’s AI Lab are so profoundly important to ensure Ghana takes the lead in making fundamental breakthroughs in the area of AI.”
?Mr. Gamey, was optimistic the Lab would make Ghana competitive, create opportunities for investments and high-quality jobs.
The Lab will also tackle Ghana’s AI challenge with labour substitution by redesigning jobs and creating opportunities for Ghanaians to prepare for newer and higher-earning jobs that have become available now. ?
“We envision new AI applications that will accelerate scientific discovery, transform healthcare, and create new opportunities across every sector.”?
Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, the Minister of State in Charge of Special Initiatives and MP for Nkoranza South Constituency, said everyone was talking about AI now, because that was the way to go.
“Whether you like it or not, that is the way to go. AI has come to stay. People are doing more, and the space is so huge. The cyberspace AI space is so huge, and that is the way we have to go to be able to get jobs for our people,” he said.?
Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, Vice Chancellor of UPSA, said the MOU would avail some facilities for UPSA lecturers and enhance research capacity in the area of artificial intelligence and IT as a whole.
?He commended the minister and Hallmark Research Lab for considering UPSA for the partnership.
