FLASHBACK! A scene at Ablekuma North
Eight (8) persons arrested in connection with violence that characterised the parliamentary election re-run in Ablekuma North last month, have been convicted by a Circuit Court in Accra.
This followed a plea of guilty entered by all the accused persons who were hauled before the court on charges of conspiracy to commit assault and a substantive charge of assault.
The eight are Mohammed Abubakari, 32, private security; Tijani Mahmudu, 38, driver; Prince Dzakpasu, 39, businessman; Anas Mohammed, 42, estate developer; Mohammed Hamda, 35, mechanic; Darko Otibu Samuel, 33, businessman; Musah Muntari, 46, station manager and Ali Saeed aka Bomba, 43, businessman.
The convicts, according to court documents, assaulted former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson; Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei and Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader.
They all pleaded guilty to the four counts of conspiracy, and the court presided over by His Honour Isaac Addo convicted them on their own plea but deferred the sentencing to Friday, August 29, 2025.
However, the court after convicting the eight, granted them a bail of GH¢80,000 each pending the sentencing, a decision that many have described as strange.
Court document noted that the convicts assaulted the complainants on July 11, 2025 when they visited the Methodist Church Polling Station to monitor the election re-run.
It stated that Hawa Koomson and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei were initially attacked and assaulted by the convicts.
“After they were rescued by the security men at the polling station, the accused persons (convicts) proceeded to assault the 3rd complainant (Majeed Mohammed Saana) who was also at the polling centre without any provocation,” the document said.
It further stated that all the complainants were rescued and taken to Odorkor Police Station and Regional CID, where they formerly lodged a complaint of assault.
Police Medical Forms were issued to them after which they proceeded to the hospital for treatment.
The convicts were subsequently arrested. The document added that they all denied the allegations in their caution statements.
