Speaker Alban Bagbin with the cup, whiles others look on
SPEAKER OF Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin officially received the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy last Friday, ahead of the highly anticipated match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics.
Now rescheduled for September 5, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium, the 2025 Democracy Cup is an annual football tournament organised by the Parliament of Ghana, aimed at promoting democratic values, national unity, and youth engagement.
Addressing dignitaries, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin underscored the role of football in Ghana’s democracy in promoting national unity and civic education.
“We have decided to leverage the brand that you have made with the world around football to see how that could impact the quality of our democracy in Ghana, as this initiative’s goal is to use the sport’s popularity to foster a better public understanding of governance.”
The Speaker also confirmed he would lead a delegation to present the trophy to other arms of government, including President John Dramani Mahama, emphasising the collaborative spirit of the Democracy Cup.
“We hope and pray that His Excellency will also find time on that day to come to the sports stadium,” he said.
Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin further revealed broader ambitions for the football initiative, emphasising that together with parliamentary leadership, he is getting all MPs to reach out to their constituencies and partner with the Ghana Education Service to equip physical education teachers nationwide with the skills to identify and nurture football talents from an early age.
Launched in 2024, the Democracy Cup is a forward-thinking parliamentary initiative that harnesses the unifying spirit of football to underscore democratic ideals, encourage civic participation, and foster peaceful coexistence across communities.
