GRIDCo, the Ghana Grid Company Limited, has announced that due to limited gas supply to Tema, there will be a supply gap of 550MW at peak time, affecting the power supply to consumers in some parts of the country.
This development is a blow to the country’s efforts to ensure a stable and reliable power supply, and it’s a challenge that GRIDCo is working to address.
Background
GRIDCo was incorporated in December 2006 to carry out the economic dispatching and transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities in Ghana and West Africa.
The company became operational on August 1, 2008, following the transfer of the Transmission System Department and its core staff from VRA to GRIDCo.
Today, GRIDCo operates the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), transmitting electricity to thirty-one bulk customers and distribution utilities from eleven wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority (VRA).
The Current Challenge
According to GRIDCo, the limited gas supply to Tema has resulted in a supply gap of 550MW at peak time, which will affect the power supply to consumers in some parts of the country.
This is a significant challenge, as it will impact the daily lives of many Ghanaians who rely on electricity for their homes, businesses, and industries.
GRIDCo’s Efforts
Despite this challenge, GRIDCo is working to ensure that the impact of the supply gap is minimized.
The company is exploring alternative sources of power to bridge the gap, and it’s working closely with its stakeholders to ensure that the situation is resolved as quickly as possible.
The company has also apologized for the inconvenience caused by the supply gap and has assured the public that it’s doing everything possible to restore power supply to normal levels.
