In a stunning turn of events, the Manhyia Palace has rebuffed the public apology offered by media personalities Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci for their criticisms of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Instead, the Palace demands that Media General, Onua TV’s parent company, appear in person to apologise.
Background
Afia Pokua’s comments on Onua TV’s “Biribi Gyegye Wo” show sparked widespread outrage, with many Ghanaians condemning her for disrespecting the Asantehene.
After her unguarded utterances, Afia Pokua matched some influential people to the palace to apologise but they were not accepted.
Kumawood Actor Kwaku Manu even stated that Otumfuo is above the law, beyond the reach of the President or Supreme Court.
Mona Gucci, the show’s host, faced criticism for allowing the contentious discussion.
The Rejected Apology
Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci apologized on their knees at Manhyia, but the Palace deemed their apology insufficient, citing concerns over Media General’s editorial policies.
The Palace seeks assurances that Media General will take concrete steps to prevent similar incidents.
This development has sparked debate about media responsibility, cultural sensitivity, and free speech limits.
Onua TV previously faced criticism and was fined by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in 2022 for breaching broadcasting regulations.
