Residents of Akyem-Adasawase, a farming community in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region, on Monday nearly manhandled officials from the Community Water & Sanitation Agency (CWSA) who visited the town to commission a new pilot pre-paid water system.
According to them, the CWSA officials failed to consult them before the mechanised water project was done, as they cannot afford to pay through pre-paid system.
In an interview with DAILY GUIDE, the residents revealed that they prefer their old boreholes to the new mechanised system.
Another protestor also claimed the land on which the project was done is a property belonging to his late mother, and CSWA failed to the needful by consulting him first before the commencement of the project.
Residents also indicated that the chief, opinion leaders and the assemblyman failed to consult them for any dialogue before going ahead with the project.
A team of journalists who accompanied CSWA to cover the commissioning of the project had a torrid time providing coverage, as the agitated residents tried to prevent them.
A driver was also prevented from offloading a truck load of canopies and chairs brought for the programme, and the assemblyman of the area was also not spared at all.
Even a meeting held between the chief of the town, Osabarima Kwame Tia, and CSWA, together with the Project Maji officials, was almost disrupted by the irate youth.
It took the intervention of Mr. Kwabena Nkansah, the DCE of the area, who rushed to the venue and assured the parties involved that the payment for using the water would be post-paid instead of pre-paid.
The event was, however, postponed until further notice.
The pre-paid water system is a new pilot project being introduced by CSWA, in partnership with Project Maji.
