Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on Ghanaians to support one another during these challenging economic times, emphasising the importance of compassion and solidarity.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honor at the 31st Biennial General Council meeting of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, held at the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo, Upper East Region, Mahama emphasized the severity of the current economic situation in the country.
Mr Mahama, who is also a member of the Assemblies of God Church, noted that the country is grappling with significant economic challenges, which have led to increased hardship for many Ghanaians.
He referenced recent statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service, which revealed a concerning rise in multidimensional poverty across the nation.
“We’ve seen an increase in multidimensional poverty from the Ghana Statistical Service’s recent statistics. It says that 8 million of our people in 2023 went one day without food because they couldn’t afford it. It means that people are hungrier, and the hardship is real.
“This is the time for us to show compassion to each other because, in times of poverty, we must be our fellow’s keepers,” he advised.
His appeal comes at a time when many Ghanaians are feeling the effects of economic difficulties, including rising inflation, unemployment, and the high cost of living.
The former president stressed that these hardships call for a collective response, where individuals, especially those who are more fortunate, should extend a helping hand to the less privileged in society.
