Former president John Dramani Mahama has enjoined religious leaders to intensify their prayers for the country to be relieved of the current economic crisis and to ensure peace before, during and after the December polls.
Addressing a heralding crowd in Wa at the episcopal ordination and installation of the Catholic Bishop of Wa, Most Rev Fransisca Bomansaan, the former president said it is not a stroke of luck that Ghana continues to be an oasis of peace in the sub-region but for the abundant mercy of God, hence, the need for religious bodies to continue to offer intercessory prayers for the country to maintain its enviable position as a peaceful nation in the turbulent sub-Sahara Africa.
He urged the church to continue to be an irrepressible moral voice in the Ghanaian society.
The former president who doubles as the flag bearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace during the 2024 electioneering season and called the president and the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to follow suit.
“As a leader of a major political grouping in Ghana, the NDC, I wish to assure you all that my comrades and I will work with the church to ensure total peace and progress of our country. I hope that our president and members of his party will make a similar commitment to work with us all for a successful election and a peaceful nation,” he stated.
The Upper West Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu who represented the president charged Ghanaians to embrace the values of tolerance and reject all forms of violence and intimidation as the country gears up for the 2024 general elections.
He assured of the government’s commitment to supporting the church in its mission to promote peace, justice and the well-being of all citizens.
Pope Francis appointed Most Rev. Fr. Bomansaan as bishop on 22nd May 2024 to lead the Wa Diocese after the demise of Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M.Afr on 27th November 2022.
He is the 5th Bishop of the Wa Diocese with vast experience in the Catholic Church.
