Joel Manigault, a 35-year-old single father, battling Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a progressive degenerative eye disease is appealing to well-meaning individuals and organizations to assist him in raising $20,000 for his treatment in India.
RP is a genetic disorder of the eyes that causes loss of vision. Symptoms include trouble seeing at night and decreasing peripheral vision (side and upper or lower visual field).
RP has been gradually stealing his sight since his childhood. However, it was not until 2013 that he was formally diagnosed with this relentless condition.
As his world slowly descends into darkness, the stark reality confronts Mr. Manigault that without intervention, he may lose the ability to see the faces of his loved ones or appreciate the beauty of the world around him.
His diminishing vision imposes increasing limitations, impeding his capacity to work and provide for his family.
In an interview with Citi News on Friday, Mr Manigault revealed that the only available treatment for his condition is at the Med Treat Care Centre in New Delhi, India, as such treatment is not available in the country.
He noted that the required amount encompassed the medical procedures, travel, accommodation, and post-treatment care.
For Mr Manigault, the sum signified more than just a monetary figure representing the key to a future brimming with potential, where he could once again revel in the joy of seeing his daughter’s smile and navigate the world with renewed self-assurance.
He therefore earnestly appeals to everyone to contribute towards restoring his sight and securing a brighter future for himself and his daughter.
