The list of special voters for the 2020 general elections has been published by the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to the electoral management body, the list has been published on its website for the perusal of registered special voters who will vote during the Tuesday, December 1, 2020, exercise.
The special voters’ list comprises names of registered voters from the security agencies, the media and staff of the Commission who will work on Election Day.
In a statement, the EC disclosed that soft copies of the special voters’ register have also been provided to the representatives of organizations participating in the exercise to enable their members to verify their details and locations ahead of time.
“The publication of the Special Voters List will enable Registered Special Voters to know their various Polling Stations ahead of time. This will promote a seamless and timely electoral process. All registered Voters on the Special Voters List will be able to cast their ballots on 1st December only. It is, therefore, necessary that Applicants take the necessary steps to verify their details to avoid being disenfranchised as they will not be allowed to vote on the 7th of December 2020, should they miss the Special Voting Facility”, the EC said in its statement.
Meanwhile, the EC has served notice to the public that all names on the special voters’ list will not appear in the main register on December 7, 2020.
There were earlier concerns that the EC had denied security agencies the opportunity to register for the exercise but the Commission described as baseless and unfounded a viral video suggesting same.
We are ready to conduct special voting – EC assures
Already, the EC has expressed its preparedness to conduct the special voting exercise on the scheduled date.
Special voting is a facility provided by law to allow registered voters who will not be able to present themselves at their polling stations due to the role they play in the elections, to vote on a date before the rest of the electorate vote on the date set for the election.
Over 109,000 voters, including members of the Ghana Armed Forces, National Intelligence Bureau (formerly BNI), National Security, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Information Services Department, National Ambulance Service, Customs Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ghana Police Service and the National Media Commission are expected to cast their ballot on the day.
Director of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission Sylvia Annor in an interview with Citi News on the exercise said plans are far advanced for a successful special voting.
“The Electoral Commission is ready to conduct the special voting on December 1, 2020. All registered voters who are supposed to vote on that day must be ready with their voter’s ID and know the polling station they are supposed to go and cast their votes. We are going to go through the process just as how we will do on December 7. But, the Commission is ready for the special voting. All the details have been given to the various stakeholders. If anyone doesn’t find the name on the list, then it means that you cannot cast your ballot on that day”, she assured.
