Parts of the Dome market are in ruins after fire gutted about 20 shops at dawn on Thursday, September 10, 2020.
Shops and other structures were consumed by the fire, which is believed to have started at 1 am on Thursday.
Personnel from the Ghana Fire service have been able to douse the fire, but properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis have been destroyed.
A city guard who witnessed the incident narrated how they helped firefighters to quench the fire.
“I was seated right here when I suddenly heard an explosion. When we realized fire caused the explosion, we immediately called upon the police patrol team and the Fire Service. The police patrol team was able to get here within 30 minutes. The Fire Service on the other hand got here after 3 hours. They came from Madina. They arrived with four trucks. They ran out of water in the process of quenching the fire. So as at 5:30 am, the fire hadn’t been put out. Those of us around had to go and fetch water to help them quench the fire.”
Although affected shop owners are unable to give an estimate of what they have lost, they are calling on the government to come to their aid.
