The Consulate General of Ghana in New York has advised Ghanaians living abroad to come together to effectively and productively work with their respective city and state institutions.
He made this call when he was addressing section of Ghanaians and others, who had come to witness the Ghana Flag Raising at the City Office in Newark, New Jersey on March 7th 2019, to commemorate the 62nd Independence Day of Ghana.
Ghana Flag Raising is an event organized by The Newark Municipal Council, Office of the Mayor International Relations and Diaspora Affairs, in collaboration with the Ghanaian Community each year to commemorate the Independence of Ghana.
The Mayor of Newark, Ras J. Baraka, in his opening remarks, expressed his joy at being part of the celebration because of his belief in diversity and his affinity with Ghanaians and Ghana.
The Mayor is married to Linda Jumah, daughter of Maxwell Kofi Jumah, CEO of GIHOC Distilleries, former MP of Asokwa and former Mayor of Kumasi.
He revealed that his reelection campaign message, “Forward Ever Backward Never” was inspired by a statement from Kwame Nkrumah, first President of Ghana.
He called for Ghanaians to come together and understand that his office is open to them always.
The Consul General of the Consulate General of Ghana in New York, Professor Samuel Amoako in his address admonished the people to be united, “we need unity at home and in the diaspora. In the diaspora, we need unity among individuals, we need unity among Associations and we need unity among our Chiefs. If we unite it will be easy and extremely efficient and productive to deal with State and City Institutions and access the help and support that we need and deserve as Ghanaians. It will equally be easy to interact with our Missions, Embassies and Consulates General. With Unity, we will speak with one voice.”
He also used the occasion to call for an end to the feud that ensues during the organisation this event and said, “today will be the last time the Flag raising ceremony will be initiated by any individual or organization. Flag raising is a political activity. Henceforth, this political ceremony will be the responsibility of the new Council, The United Ghanaian Council of New Jersey. I will hold the executives of the Council who will be elected responsible for this ceremony among others, and I know they will not let me down.”
The event was well-attended by traditional and opinion leaders of the Ghanaian Community in New Jersey.
