Some shop owners at the Kasoa New Market in the Awutu Senya East District of the Central Region will soon lose their shops due to non-compliance.
This follows persistent calls by the Awutu Senya East Municipality for shop owners to produce documents pertaining to the acquisition of the shops at the market.
In an interview with Citi News, Isaac Ofori, the Municipal Engineer for Awutu Senya East Municipality explained that they would demolish over 200 shops at the market because most shop owners do not have documents to prove that the structures they sell in belong to them.
He indicated that about a year ago, the Assembly began auditing shop owners as a way of finding out those who have paid their commitment fees as well as those who were yet to finish paying such fees.
Subsequently, notices were given to defaulters, but until now, only 2o percent of the shop owners have regularized their documents.
Mr. Ofori hinted that they have served a 21-day notice to shop owners who have not regularized their documentations to do so or have their shops destroyed.
“When the 21-day notice expires on October 19, we would seek a demolishing order and demolish the over 200 structures”.
Meanwhile, some shop owners who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity said they have spent millions of cedis in acquiring these shops and would do anything to protect them.
Some also indicated that the Awutu Senya East Municipality should give them more time to produce the required documents.
