The government has set a minimum producer price of GH¢12 per kilogram for raw cashew nuts (RCN) for the 2025/2026 crop season, the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) said, following consultations with industry stakeholders.
The price was approved under the TCDA’s mandate in the Tree Crops Development Authority Act, 2019 (Act 1010) and its implementing regulations, L.I. 2471 (2023), which empower the authority to regulate pricing across the tree crops value chain.
The decision followed a stakeholder engagement held on December 10 in Techiman, in the Bono East Region, bringing together farmers, aggregators, traders, exporters and processors. Participants were taken through the pricing framework and cost assumptions underpinning the recommended producer price.
According to the TCDA, the pricing model was anchored on a free-on-board (FOB) benchmark of $1,400 per metric ton, based on 48 kernel outturn ratio (KOR), a nut count of 180 and maximum moisture content of 10%. The model also factored in a six-month average exchange rate of GH¢11.0241 to the dollar, alongside statutory charges and operational costs across the supply chain.
Using these inputs, the formula yielded an indicative producer price of $1,012.08 per metric ton, equivalent to GH¢11,157.34, based on 46 KOR, a nut count of 190 and moisture content capped at 10%. This translated into an implied farmgate price of about GH¢11.16 per kilogram.
Stakeholders, however, agreed to adopt a higher, rounded figure to simplify transactions and improve farmer incentives. The government subsequently approved GH¢12 per kilogram as the minimum producer price for the season.
The TCDA said the agreed price reflects a shared objective of maintaining farmer profitability while supporting a competitive domestic cashew market. Stakeholders also agreed that the minimum producer price would be reviewed periodically to reflect movements in global prices, exchange rates and other key market variables.
Ghana is among Africa’s leading producers of raw cashew nuts, with the crop playing a growing role in rural incomes and non-traditional export earnings.
