The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in the Ashanti Region has announced a significant financial reconciliation for the third quarter of 2025, securing over GH?81million in combined consumer refunds and recovered revenue for utility providers.
The commission’s latest quarterly report reveals it facilitated a total settlement of a little above GH?81million. This figure comprises more than GH?426,000 in direct refunds to customers and a substantial GH?80.6million in revenue assurance for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
The settlements stem from the office’s robust dispute resolution mechanism, which processed 509 formal complaints between July and September. The PURC successfully closed 269 of these cases, achieving a resolution rate of 52.8 percent. ECG accounted for 322 (63.2 percent) complaints while GWL accounted for 187 (36.7 percent) complaints.
Beyond financial mediation, the commission reported tangible infrastructure upgrades driven by its oversight. Key interventions included the replacement of nine faulty electric poles, seven transformers and 10 defective metres. The office also expedited eight delayed new service connections and oversaw the repair of five critical pipe bursts, addressing key service delivery failures.
Public Relations Officer, PURC – Ashanti Region, Richard Asiedu, who mentioned these during a press conference in Kumasi, further highlighted that these results underscore the commission’s dual mandate to protect consumer rights while ensuring the financial viability of utility service providers.
“The outcomes highlight a critical balance in the utility sector: holding companies accountable for service quality while also safeguarding their revenue streams, which is essential for future infrastructure investment and stable service delivery in the region,” he said.
