Afram Publications Limited has launched an inclusive education book titled Suspects in the School – Secrets and Surprising Solutions.
The book explores issues often overlooked in children’s literature, including the challenges faced by children with different abilities, and whether children should be encouraged to follow their interests or hobbies.
Author Margaretha Ubels noted that broader social concerns such as plastic pollution, belief in witchcraft and corruption – rarely addressed in books for young readers – are also captured in the story to promote responsible citizenship.
Offering a glimpse into the plot, Ms. Ubels explained: “All kinds of things are happening in their school: there are unexplained accidents, students disappear, there is something fishy about a competition and a classmate demonstrates unprecedented bad behaviour. The book follows three students as they try to make sense of the situations and defy the nonsense that others make of it. Through this, they emerge as detectives but also as leaders, concerned citizens and caring advocates. Readers experience these qualities as they get inside their skins and their heads, and the students become role models for responding to today’s realities in schools across the country.”
She added that Suspects in the School is a valuable resource for parents, as it not only builds children’s reading skills but also shapes their perceptions of the world around them.
To make the book accessible to children with dyslexia, the author explained that the formatting and typesetting are dyslexia-friendly, helping readers with learning difficulties to engage with the text more easily. “Parents of children who don’t like reading should give them a copy and encourage them to engage with it, to taste the joy of reading stories despite the difficulties they usually encounter with written text,” she said.
Addressing the launch, Vice President of the Ghana Journalists’ Association, Rebecca Ekpe, commended the author. “Margaretha Ubels is indeed a strong woman, bold and courageous to confront the subject matter of dyslexia and the fundamental question of inclusive education and learning in her book Suspects in the School – Secrets and Surprising Solutions in the way she did.”
The book, which sheds light on the struggles faced by many children in Ghana, is authored by a development worker who has spent over two decades in the non-profit sector as an NGO leader and social entrepreneur. It is available at Blue Knight Bookshop, EPP Book Services, Book Nook, Afram Publications Limited office in Kumasi, and other bookshops nationwide.
