The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has welcomed a strategic insurance partnership between Vitality Health International and Acacia Health Insurance, describing it as a positive development for Ghana’s health sector.
Speaking at the partnership’s official partnership, Dr. Andy Mprah, Deputy Director-Private Health Insurance Services Directorate, NHIA, acknowledged the growing importance of private insurance in health delivery.
“Private health insurance fills service gaps and enhances access to care,” he noted.
Outlining NHIA’s stance on the partnership, Dr Mprah said: “We see today not only as a celebration of partnership but also a strategic moment to align innovation with regulation”. He reiterated the regulator’s commitment to fostering an environment that supports financial sustainability and responsible innovation.
Also addressing attendees at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of Vitality Health International explained their rationale behind the partnership.
“We are not experts in Ghana; that’s why we needed the right partner – and we found that in Acacia and Enterprise,” she said. She added that given Ghana’s underlying burden of communicable diseases, Vitality Health International sees an opportunity to make a meaningful impact through its products and services.
In his remarks, Managing Director-Acacia Health Insurance Dr. Dan Armooh said: “This collaboration marks an evolution from paying for illness to paying for wellness”. He further noted that Acacia Health Insurance’s national provider network would administer claims and organise onsite wellness days, ensuring that employers feel the benefit of premium relief while reducing absenteeism.
He added that the decision to partner with Vitality International stemmed from the latter’s expertise and global reach in the insurance sector.
The launch also introduced Vitality Health International’s shared-value health insurance model and a suite of new benefits tailored for employer groups in Ghana. These include flexible health insurance schemes, a behaviour-change rewards programme under the Vitality brand and a malaria-specific benefit.
The partnership aims to provide innovative and impactful solutions to some of the country’s persistent health challenges.
