Bentsifi joins industry practitioners in welcoming renowned Marketing professor and distinguished faculty member at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) – Prof. Kobby Mensah, who has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourist Development Company (GTDC) – the government agency responsible for the promotion and mobilisation of resources for investment in tourism undertakings and services.
Prof. Mensah, whose wealth of experience in tourism marketing, strategic branding and investment promotion makes him a fitting leader to steer GTDC toward greater relevance and impact, has been a key figure in Ghana’s tourism landscape, consulting on major tourism projects and advising businesses on destination marketing strategies.
One of his most notable contributions is spearheading the Destination Legon Tourism Marketing Exhibition, an innovative initiative that integrates academia with industry practice. This flagship project, which is part of the ‘Tourism Marketing’ course at UGBS, equips students with hands-on experience in branding and promoting destinations, much like products and services.
Level 400, MBA and MPhil students from the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship are tasked with crafting compelling campaigns for various Ghanaian tourist attractions, sharpening their skills in real-world tourism marketing.
His appointment to GTDC is widely regarded as a strategic move to revitalise the institution, which plays a crucial role in attracting investments and promoting tourism as a viable business sector.
Industry stakeholders are optimistic that his blend of academic insight and practical expertise will transform GTDC into a more dynamic force in Ghana’s tourism development to unlock new opportunities, attract global investors and maximise the country’s tourism potentials.
Among others, the GTDC is also mandated to seek equity participation in joint ventures with Ghanaians as well as foreign concerns and individuals in tourism development projects; provide financial and technical assistance for small businesses in the tourism industry to improve the efficiency and level of their services; as well as to carry on any other business which may conveniently render profitable the operations of the company or enhance the property values or rights of the company.
Poaching on the increase in Mole Park
While four others managed to escape, 2 individuals – identified as Yonjie Domuo, 55 and Dari Kwabena, 24 – suspected of poaching in the Mole Game Reserve in the Savannah Region have been arrested by rangers of the Forestry Commission during routine patrol on Sunday, January 26.
Along with smoked carcasses of antelopes tied in two sacks, 4 locally manufactured single barrel guns were also retrieved and confiscated by the rangers.
Assistant Law Enforcement Officer at the Mole Park, Martin Abodiba Ndego, who has since handed them over to the Damongo District Police, says incidents of poaching in the Mole Game Reserve is increasing.
“This is the third time we have arrested poachers this January alone. They go deep into the forest to undertake these illegal activities,” says Officer Ndego, revealing that dealing with the activities of poachers in the park involves a multi-faceted approach of using technology in surveillance and continuous education due to the sheer size and nature of the park.
He, however, states clearly: “Our rangers have a 24-hour surveillance operation in the reserve; and having intensified their patrols, they will arrest and ensure the law takes its course on any poachers”.
The Mole National Park, known for its elephant herds, antelopes and exotic bird species is the largest and most prestigiously protected area in Ghana, covering 4,577 square kilometres.
