The Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative for Employment (YIEDIE) project has held this year's YIEDIE awareness and registration fair at Tarkoradi with a call on the youth to take advantage of the project to be trained in order to play a major role in the country's construction industry.
Mr Abdul Salam Mohammed, Western Regional Coordinator, Global Communities, who made the call, said the construction sector presents opportunities for the youth to be gainfully employed.
The event which was attended by scores of youth drawn from Tarkoradi saw the youth between the ages 17-24 screened and registered to participate in the project's entrepreneurial training programme.
The successful youth would be trained to acquire knowledge in developing a business plan, how to register a business, proper booking practices and business advisory support service among others.
Mr Mohammed said the awareness creation and registration fair was also designed to afford the youth the opportunity to interact with successful business men and women in the construction sector with similar backgrounds.
YIEDIE is a five-year project designed to improve the capacity of youth and service providers across the construction value chain through an integrated youth-led market systems model to create economic opportunities for youth and women in the construction industry.
YIEDIE hopes to directly reach 23,700 youth aged between 17-24 years who have dropped out of school living on less than $2 a day in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi, Tema and Ashiaman with training in technical, life and entrepreneurship skills leading to employment.
Sponsored by Mastercard Foundation, the YIEDIE Project which ends in 2020 is being implemented by Global Communities, an international non-profit organisation, with other partners as Opportunities Industrialisation Centre Ghana, African Aurora Business Network LLC, Republic Boafo Limited and Artisans Association of Ghana.
He said the project was on target in hitting its target of providing technical training for the youth to be engaged in the construction sector adding that "we are almost hitting the target with the technical aspect but where we have a little shortfall is the entrepreneurial side and that is why we are organizing this programme, particularly to encourage more youth who have not been able to benefit from this kind of training to come and be part of it."
He encouraged the youth to take advantage of the numerous job opportunities in the construction section to build their skills and create their own businesses to address the growing unemployment situation in the country.
Gifty Adelaide Quansah, CEO Adelle's Interior Décor Palace, who benefited from the project's entrepreneurial training programme advised the youth to take advantage of the projects to build and expand their entrepreneurial ideas.
