Women Urged to Take Up Leadership Roles

The Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has called on women in Ghana to take up leadership roles both socially and politically.

She said women should avail themselves and contest for political positions to serve as role models for others.

The Minister made this call at a press briefing in Accra to clarify President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo -Addo's comment on the dynamism of women empowerment.

According to her, Ghanaian women were not supporting their fellow women who were taking advantage of the opportunities to make a difference in society. She said some women activists were silent when other women were heckled while others were stopped from contesting for leadership positions in government.

Mrs. Ekuful underscored the need for women to support their fellows in leadership positions and speak for the liberation of women in society, adding that the president had challenged all women to rise and stand for their rights, boldly taking advantage of the numerous opportunities given them.

She stated that as the African Union (AU) Gender Advocate, President Akufo -Addo was particular about the opportunities presented to women to rise to higher levels in Ghana, citing that about 75% of Microfinance and Small Loans (MASLOC) were given to women entrepreneurs.

A Deputy Minister for Information, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah Adjei touched on the contributions women were making to socio-economic development due to the support they received from the President who appointed them into government and encouraged all to support them.
