The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said it was horrified by the unprovoked brutality unleashed by (New Patriotic Party (NPP) vigilantes on supporters of the NDC at the residence of its parliamentary candidate and other polling stations during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election held on 31st January, 2019.
A statement signed by the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu issued in Accra stated that the Council was equally scandalised by attempts to blame the NDC for this mayhem adding, 'this defies logic and common sense.'
"How could the NDC unleash such savagery on its own candidate and supporters", it questioned.
The NPP brutalities of this nature according to the NDC Council of Elders, devalues the image of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and bastardises the President's pretentions to commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
" They post definite threat to the nation and its fledgling democracy and lay the foundation for mayhem in future elections. They undermine investor confidence that would lead to economic stagnation." The statement noted.
The Council of Elders of the NDC therefore called on President to rein in and disband the NPP 'thugs' as a matter of extreme urgency and to do everything in his power to preserve peace in the nation.
It noted that the President must allow the established security services of the nation to do their professional work.
"We also call upon the IGP to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and redeem the image of the Police by ensuring maximum punishment for those involved." The statement added.
