The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on its members to withdraw all emergency services as part of its ongoing strike action.
In addition, GRNMA has also withdrawn Out-Patient Department Services and outlined a roadmap for its industrial action.
In a sequel statement to its earlier announcement of the strike action, the Association called on all nurses and midwives to remain “focused, resolute and unperturbed”.
“You are hereby informed that withdrawal of OPD Services should go along with withdrawal of Emergency Services,” a statement issued on June 3, 2025 stated.
The GRNMA urged all nurses and midwives to participate in the industrial action.
More than 128,000 nurses and midwives across Ghana on May 28, 2025 declared a nationwide strike action over government’s continued delay in implementing their agreed conditions of service.
GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori Ofori Ampofo outlined the roadmap for the planned industrial actions as follows:
- June 2–3, 2025: Nurses and midwives will wear red armbands and headbands in protest.
- June 4–8, 2025: Withdrawal of outpatient department (OPD) services.
- From June 9, 2025: Total withdrawal of all nursing and midwifery services nationwide.
The Ministry of Health in responding to the industrial action by GRNMA on May 31, 2025 reiterated its appeal to the Association to rescind its decision to proceed with the industrial action.
The Ministry directed all heads of the various units to ensure that continuous healthcare services, including maternity and emergency care, are available at all health facilities.
But in its statement on June 3, 2025, the GRNMA said members will not be intimidated by “divisive and false narratives.”
The Association called on the Health Ministry to “channel its energies towards getting approval of the Collective Agreement from the Ministry of Finance and implementing same.”
The Association notified all rotation and trainee nurses and midwives to participate fully in the industrial action outlined earlier in the roadmap.
“Remember, you work under direct supervision of your seniors, without which you are liable to be held responsible for any mishaps. Therefore, follow the roadmap of actions diligently,” the statement added.
The Association called on Parliament to intervene in the matter to prevent a total shutdown of nursing and midwifery services by June 9, 2025.
“We are grateful to the nursing and midwifery fraternity for the deep sense of solidarity and urge you all to remain vigilant, united and steadfast as we collectively fight the injustice of the non-approval and non-implementation of our Collective Agreement,” GRNMA noted.
