Ghana’s Unity Cup game against Nigeria on Wednesday night will definitely not live long in the memories of Ghanaians, for obvious reasons. The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to their sworn rivals, Nigeria, with a calamitous first half performance.
What the encounter, however, will be remembered for is the birth of a star, Caleb Yirenkyi.
The Nordsjaelland man was on top of his game, and hardly put a foot wrong.
Yirenkyi was introduced as a second half substitute for Medeama’s Kamaradini Mamudu.
Yirenkyi, who by trade is a midfielder, had to do a job for the Black Stars as a wing-back in Otto Addo’s three-back system.
He slotted in seamlessly, making marauding runs across the full-back areas.
Yirenkyi came close to scoring for the Black Stars from two headed attempts. His introduction stabilised Ghana’s midfield and gave the team a sense of direction in a generally chaotic game.
“I think it was a good opportunity for me to help, do my best for the team, and this was the main goal. I had a lot of praise, and I am happy with that,” he told 3Sports while reflecting on his debut.
Yirenkyi’s all-action performance has left a lot of Ghanaians swooning over the 19-year-old, particularly because it is his first season as a professional.
