The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Chapter, has issued a strong call for justice following the tragic murder of one of its respected members, Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedeker.
In a press release dated May 25, 2025, UTAG-UEW expressed profound sorrow and shock at the discovery of Prof. Amedeker’s body, which was exhumed from his residence in Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba.
The Association described the incident as a devastating blow not only to the UEW academic community but to the entire nation.
“This heartbreaking incident has shaken not only the UEW academic community, but the entire nation,” the statement said.
UTAG-UEW extended its condolences to the bereaved family, students, and colleagues of the late professor, while commending the Ghana Police Service for the swift commencement of investigations and the arrest of one suspect so far.
However, the Association emphasized the need for intensified police efforts to ensure that all individuals connected to the crime are apprehended and prosecuted.
“This is not only a matter of accountability but also a crucial affirmation of the safety and sanctity of our academic institutions,” the release stressed.
UTAG-UEW pledged its support to the investigation and called on government, security agencies, and university authorities to collaborate in strengthening security measures for both academic staff and local communities.
The statement, signed by UTAG-UEW President Stephen Osei Akyiaw and Secretary Dr. Bernard Tutu-Boahene, concluded with a tribute to Prof. Amedeker’s legacy, affirming the Association’s commitment to uphold the values he stood for—truth, justice, and service to academia.
