Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia A. B. Akuffo, has issued a clarion call for a return to moral values, a pursuit of excellence, and a renewed spirit of service as the foundation for sustainable democratic governance.
Speaking at the Methodist University of Ghana to commemorate the institution’s 25th anniversary, Justice Akuffo delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the theme “Morality, Excellence and Service in Sustainable Democratic Governance.”
Drawing on decades of legal and civic experience, Justice Akuffo emphasized that democracy must be more than elections and institutions—it must be rooted in ethical leadership, civic responsibility, and national character.
“We must breathe moral life into our Constitution,” she urged, warning that without a steadfast moral compass, governance risks becoming transactional, complacent, and disconnected from the people it serves.
In a wide-ranging and introspective address, the former Chief Justice challenged both citizens and leaders to reject mediocrity, corruption, and impunity, and instead build a democratic culture defined by integrity, discipline, and accountability.

She called on Ghana’s youth to take up the mantle of transformation, insisting that “leadership is stewardship, not ownership,” and that every public role must be measured by its service to the common good.
