At the 2024 AIPS Sport Media Awards, Emmanuel Owusu, the Sports Producer for Akoma FM, placed seventh in Africa in the Young Reporters SHORT VIDEO FEATURE category.
International praise was given to his feature, “Mascot inspires hope”—The Story of Mohammed Drabo—for its social significance and profundity.
Despite losing his left leg, Mohammed Drabo aspires to be among the top football players in Ivory Coast in this narrative set in the center of Abidjan. He was one of the mascots for the 2023 AFCON.
Since it was published, Mohammed has received lifetime support from the Ivory Coast-based betting company “1XBet” to help him achieve his goals.
In a category that received over 2000 submissions from all around the world, Emmanuel Owusu outperformed hundreds of other entries to position in the top seven, making him one of the most promising young sports journalists in the world.
After a rigorous three-stage evaluation process that was supervised by the AIPS Executive Committee, he received his final ranking.
Emmanuel praised his teammates after accomplishing this feat. “Despite not being able to take home the major prize, I’m pleased to report that I placed seventh in Africa. I sincerely appreciate your support, both as a family and as a team. This year, we’ll keep working harder for the big prize.”
This not only demonstrates our company’s Media General position as Ghana’s top media brand, but it also supports our capacity to develop, identify, and provide young talent with platforms.
We extend our congratulations to Emmanuel Owusu, who has been employed by Media General since 2021 as a sports producer, for accomplishing this and putting the business and himself on the international scene.
His selection carries on a long history of Ghanaian brilliance in sports journalism on a worldwide scale.
