The Shama District Health Directorate is facing serious transportation crisis as it is currently operating with only one pickup vehicle to serve the entire municipality.
The 2019 registered vehicle is overstretched as it is used for almost every activity within the municipality.
District Health Director, Judith Naa Deide Okine explains that the lone vehicle is used for a wide range of critical tasks, including vaccine distribution, outreach programs, and administrative duties.
“This single vehicle is doing almost everything. It’s affecting our ability to reach communities on time, especially those in remote areas,” she noted.
Health workers are now forced to rely on motorbikes, which Mrs Okine says often pose safety risks, especially in rough terrains.
In one instance, she had to lease the pickup to a team on outreach duty while she rode a motorbike to supervise services in remote communities.
With the deteriorating state of Shama Health Center, the Directorate has adopted a community outreach strategy to deliver healthcare at residents’ doorsteps.
Hence the urgent need for additional vehicle to sustain the strategy, as the lack of adequate transportation is threatening the sustainability of this approach.
As part of efforts to address their plights, Mrs Okine revealed a comprehensive proposal has been submitted to Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Shama.
She expressed optimism that the intervention would lead to a swift resolution of their logistical constraints.
Meanwhile, the Directorate continues to appeal to government and relevant stakeholders for additional vehicles to support healthcare delivery and sustain outreach efforts across the municipality.
