The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), along with allied trade organizations, has strongly condemned what it calls a “malicious attempt” by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to discredit the use of Dr. Joseph Obeng’s honorary doctorate title.
In a statement, GUTA expressed outrage over GTEC’s cautionary press release, describing it as a deliberate act meant to tarnish the image of a man celebrated for decades of service to Ghana’s informal sector and economic development.
“This is an overreach and a reputational attack on a leader whose impact speaks louder than credentials,” the statement said.
Dr. Obeng, who was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanity by Alpha International Theological Seminary in 2016, has also received a Platinum Award for Excellence in Leadership.
GUTA emphasized that these accolades were not ornamental but hard-earned recognitions of his national influence and grassroots leadership.
GUTA is thus calling on GTEC to retract its statement and issue a public apology for the undue harm caused. “Dr. Obeng is more than a title—he is a voice for traders, a pillar of advocacy, and a champion for economic transformation,” the release stated.
The Association urged GTEC to exercise greater discretion and professionalism, consult stakeholders, and acknowledge that leadership is defined by service and impact, not academic qualifications alone.
GUTA reaffirmed its unwavering support for Dr. Obeng and all informal sector leaders striving for national progress, concluding: “We will not tolerate any attempt to undermine those who build Ghana through integrity and action.”
