
A significant leadership transition has taken place at Air Force Base Tamale, as Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai officially handed over command to Air Commodore J. Adu-Gyamfi during a colourful ceremony held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
The event marked the end of AVM Mensah-Larkai’s two years and seven months of service as Base Commander and 6 Garrison Commander—a period characterized by notable infrastructural developments and strong leadership.
Ahead of the official handover, AVM Mensah-Larkai commissioned a state-of-the-art sports complex and a crèche, symbolizing his lasting commitment to the welfare and well-being of personnel and their families. These projects form part of several initiatives undertaken during his tenure to enhance quality of life and create a conducive working environment for the troops.
The climax of the event featured an impressive Guard of Honour mounted by personnel drawn from across the 6 Garrison, including the 6 Infantry Battalion, 69 Airborne Force, 93 Signal Regiment, and Air Force Base Tamale.
In his farewell remarks, AVM Mensah-Larkai expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support, loyalty, and hard work of officers, soldiers, and Defence Civilian Staff. He praised their unwavering dedication, which he said played a pivotal role in advancing the base’s development and operational readiness.
Highlighting his accomplishments, he pointed to the numerous completed and ongoing projects that reflect a commitment to excellence and the transformation of the base into a vibrant military hub.
He congratulated Air Commodore Adu-Gyamfi on his appointment, stating that he was not just inheriting a command, but a close-knit family built on mutual respect and unity.
AVM Mensah-Larkai also extended his gratitude to key stakeholders, including the Northern Regional Minister, traditional leaders, sister security services, civil authorities, and partners such as Ibrahim Mahama and the team at DeSimone Limited.
The well-attended ceremony drew a wide array of dignitaries, including the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John Nburidiba; senior military officers from General Headquarters at Burma Camp; officers and soldiers of the Ghana Armed Forces; Defence Civilian Staff; and representatives from sister security services, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and the media.
