A heavy rainfall lasting nearly four hours has once again brought widespread flooding to Kumasi, throwing the city into chaos and severely disrupting movement and daily life on Saturday.
The storm, which began around 2:00pm—right in the midst of the evening rush—intensified the struggles of commuters and residents alike.
Hard-hit areas include Airport Roundabout, Dichemso, Anloga Junction, Santasi area, and other neighborhoods across the capital, where roads have become rivers, vehicles are stranded, and access is nearly impossible.
During the rains, residents in affected zones remained indoors and avoid walking through floodwaters, which pose serious health risks from contamination and waterborne diseases.
Some residents who contributed to Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9fm in Kumasi with Sir John on May 19, described the development as worrying.
Frustrated residents in the city, are thus appealing to the city authorities to develop a strategic plan to address issues related to flooding within the city.
“It is very worrying considering that anytime there is rainfall, even when it is not a heavy rainfall, you get all these places flooded”, they said.
They blamed the flooding on poor drainage system in the Metropolis. “The drainage system which was created when the roads were done is currently not up to standard and not up to the kind of (runoff water) that passes here”.
Another resident expressed concern about the flooding situation around the Asawase area.
“I would like the city authorities to do something about it, especially when it comes to the Asawase area.
They also blamed residents for dumping refuse into the drains.
