Ghanaian journalist and tourism ambassador Afua Asantewaa Aduonum on Thursday, May 8, 2025 announced that her second attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest individual singing marathon has been disqualified.
Asantewaa issued a statement to express gratitude to persons and organisations which supported her throughout her record attempt.
“This journey has brought discovery, growth, and development that have significantly shaped my being,” she stated despite not being able to achieve her Guinness World Record dream.
In her post on Instagram to announce the results of her record attempt, Asantewaa attached a mail from Guinness World Record which detailed explanation for disqualifying her.
GWR explained that after a review of the evidence provided by record managers, some guideline rules were not met.
According to GWR, activity and rest sequence 19 shows that Afua Asantewaa took 15-minute break at 23:25 when she only had 5 minutes of the rest time to use.
“The record attempt was therefore failed at this point,” GWR said.
The rule states that: “Rest breaks are the only point where the claimant may stop performing the activity during the attempt.
“You are allowed 5 minutes rest for every continuously completed hour of activity.”
Her first attempt, though also unsuccessful, captured national pride and admiration, and her resilience continues to inspire many across Ghana.
