The recent power outages (Dumsor) in some parts of the country continue to draw Ghanaians’ anger over what they describe as the current government’s neglect of the sector.
Some experts believe Ghanaians are not angry enough to get President John Mahama’s government to fix the problem, which has been nearly four months in office.
Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, a private legal practitioner, said the power crisis is “getting out of hand” and that something needs to be done “really quickly” about it.
“It appears Ghanaians are enjoying the new dumsor under President John Mahama, which is a dangerous sign for the country. We shouldn’t be seen as people who endorse national mediocrity anymore,” he said in a Facebook post.
The lawyer and development communications expert said blaming President Mahama for the power crisis would be “most unfair” since he has barely been in office for a year.
“It is apparent the previous government of President Nana Akufo-Addo did not fix the issue despite their repeated noise about doing that, but that should give the current regime any excuse to ignore what is becoming another disaster after what we recorded in Mahama’s first term as President,” Mr Brako-Powers said.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has revealed a possible looming power crisis with a major power supplier, Karpowership, serving notice to shut down over unpaid bills.
Although he commended the Minister and the Electricity Company of Ghana for being transparent, Mr Brako-Powers said the problem requires action and not talk.
“It’s good to be transparent to Ghanaians about the power crisis the nation is facing; however, that alone is not enough. Transparency without action equals no problem solved, and the earlier this government understands this basic principle, the better. Ghanaians want to see action and more of that and not empty words,” the lawyer said.
Mr Brako-Powers wants President Mahama to prioritise fixing the power crisis since that will drive his government’s 24-hour economic policies.
“Is it not surprising that a President promising bold economic reforms anchored on his 24-hour economy policy is paying less attention to the power crisis destroying livelihoods and businesses?” he quizzed.
