We’re working to transport kidnap victims from Nigeria; extradite suspects to Ghana – Police

The Ghana Police Service has disclosed that it is collaborating closely with Nigerian authorities to expedite the return of two victims and suspects involved in the recent kidnapping case back to Ghana.

The two victims were identified as Anastasia Badu-Atta and Evelyn Serwaa Konadu, both Ghanaians.

A ransom of GH?500,000 was demanded before the victims would be released. According to the police, a total of GH?18,000 had been paid to various mobile money numbers before the suspects were arrested.

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Signals Bureau (NSB) and the Nigeria Police Force on April 30 successfully rescued the two female victims who were kidnapped and featured in a viral video. The chilling footage, which captured the victims in distress, had sparked widespread public outrage and concern.

In a joint operation, eight suspects – five Ghanaians and three Nigerians were apprehended in connection with the kidnapping, with arrests made in both Ghana and Nigeria.

The suspects were located at various hideouts across the two countries, with law enforcement agencies working together seamlessly to track and capture the perpetrators.

At a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday May 6, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) said efforts were underway to ensure the victims are safely brought to Ghana.

DCOP Lydia Donkor noted that the suspects will also be extradited to Ghana to assist investigations.

“As of today, both suspects and victims are with the Nigerian authorities, and efforts are being made to transport the victims to Ghana,” she told the media.

DCOP Donkor revealed that the families of the victims had paid a total of GHS18,000 to various phone numbers as part of ransom demands.

However, she assured the public that the victims are currently in stable condition.

“Information received from our counterparts in Nigeria indicates that both victims are fine. They have received routine medical checks,” she added.
