Harry Kane’s career has been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, with the English striker experiencing his fair share of near misses before finally lifting a major trophy with Bayern Munich this term.
After years of coming close of winning titles for both club and country but falling short, Kane’s perseverance has paid off as Bayern Munich clinched their 34th Bundesliga title, ending his long wait for a major trophy.
3Sports take a closer look at Kane’s previous title near misses that ultimately made this championship all the more sweet:
1. Carabao Cup Final (2015): A London Rival Edged Spurs Out
In the 2015 Carabao Cup Final, Kane’s Tottenham Hotspur side faced off against London rivals Chelsea. Despite a valiant effort, Spurs came up short as Chelsea beat them 2-0 on the night , and Kane’s dreams of lifting his first major trophy were put on hold. This defeat was a tough pill to swallow, but Kane’s determination only grew stronger.
2. Champions League Final (2019): Liverpool’s Dominant Display
In the 2019 Champions League Final, Kane’s Tottenham side faced a formidable Liverpool team in the Champions League final at the newly built Wonder Metropolitan Stadium in Madrid. Despite a spirited performance, Spurs were outmuscled by the Reds, who ran out 2-0 winners. This defeat was a bitter pill for Kane, but he continued to work hard and push himself to the next level.
3. European Championship Final (2020): Italy’s Penalty Shootout Win
In the 2020 European Championship Final, Kane led England to the final, only to fall short against Italy in a penalty shootout. Despite a valiant effort, the Three Lions came up just short, and Kane’s hopes of lifting a major international trophy were dashed. This defeat was a heartbreaker, but Kane’s resolve remained unbroken.
4. Carabao Cup Final (2021): Manchester City’s Victory
In the 2021 Carabao Cup Final, Kane’s Tottenham side faced Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Despite a strong performance, Spurs came up short once again, with Manchester City emerging victorious with a narrow 1-0 victory to clinch their record fourth consecutive title.
5. German Super Cup Final (2024): RB Leipzig’s Upset Win
In the German Super Cup Final,Bayern have been so successful in general that Kane had the opportunity to win his first piece of silverware – and the first of his career, let’s not forget – on his debut.
Bayern fell behind against RB Leipzig inside three minutes of the 2023 DFL-Supercup, as Dani Olmo slotted home through a crowd of players. The Spaniard then scored a wondergoal on the stroke of half-time, prodding home after spinning away from two defenders with a turn that almost (or should that be Olmo-st?) defied the laws of physics. And finally, five minutes after Kane’s introduction from the bench, Olmo completed his hat-trick and Leipzig won 3-0 win to claim the first trophy of the 2023-24 German season.
6. Bundesliga Title (2024): Leverkusen’s Surprise Win
In his first season with Bayern Munich, Kane came agonizingly close to winning the Bundesliga title. However, Bayer Leverkusen’s dominant campaign ended Bayern’s 11-consecutive title wins. This defeat was a tough one to swallow, but Kane’s perseverance ultimately paid off as Bayern Munich clinched the title this season.
7. European Championship Final (2024): Spain’s Last-Minute Goal
Four years later, Kane captain his captives to another final but could not win England their first European Championship after substitute Mikel Oyarzabel last minute goal handed Spain 2-1 victory over England.
After 694 matches for club and country without a trophy, Kane’s wait is finally over. Bayern Munich’s 34th Bundesliga title win marks a major milestone in Kane’s career, and he’s undoubtedly over the moon.
This title is a testament to Kane’s hard work, determination, and perseverance.
As Kane and Bayern Munich celebrate their title win, they’ll be looking forward to more silverware in the future.
