NADMO officers in Ashanti Region intensify flood-prevention efforts ahead of rains

Floods and their devastating consequences have become an annual ordeal in many parts of the Ashanti Region.

Over the past few years, the situation has been worsened by construction on waterways, heavily silted drains, and indiscriminate dumping of waste in major drains.

Last year, flood-related incidents claimed dozens of lives in the region. This year, however, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is taking a proactive stance; shifting from disaster response to prevention.

NADMO has pinpointed several flood-prone communities, including Owabi, Aboabo Pelele, Akwatialia, Sawaba, Anloga Junction, Bremang UGC, and Kronum Abuohia.

Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, Ashanti Regional NADMO Director, outlined their strategy: “We are prioritizing the desilting and dredging of major streams, drains, and clogged gutters in these vulnerable areas to ensure the free flow of water.”

To bolster flood mitigation efforts, NADMO staff in the region are undergoing intensive training on disaster prevention techniques.

“We are engaging all key stakeholders to collaborate in addressing this challenge. With the necessary support, we aim to prevent or significantly reduce flooding this year,” Mr. Nasir emphasized.

As the rains approach, some residents in high-risk zones are already taking precautions. While a few have opted to relocate, others have begun clearing blocked drains to minimize potential flood damage.

With these combined efforts from authorities and communities, the region hopes to mitigate the impact of the impending rainy season.
