The Minority in Parliament has declared its support and announced a decision to join the nationwide protest by some political parties in what they say is an action to defend Ghana’s democracy.
The demonstration, scheduled for Monday, May 5 2025, is being organized by a coalition of opposition and independent political groups, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP).
The Minority caucus in a statement on April 30, 2025 said the protest is “not just a political action, but a constitutional imperative.”
The contended that the protest is to draw the attention of the nation and the international community to the “increasing threats to judicial independence, constitutional order, and democratic governance in Ghana.”
The Minority’s decision to join the protest is further fueled by the recent termination of appointment of public servants which the caucus says is “is a blow to national stability, professional integrity, and economic justice,” citing the negative effect of such a decision on the youth.
The statement signed by Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh added that the deciisn to embark on the protest is further grounded on troubling allegations of plots to remove the Electoral Commission Chairperson and her deputies.
The Minority warned that “consequently, these actions, if allowed to proceed, risk plunging Ghana into a crisis of legitimacy.”
Concluding their statement, the Minority Caucus reaffirmed its solidarity with all Ghanaians committed to protecting the country’s democratic values.
“This is not about partisanship. This is about principle. It is about preserving the rule of law, ensuring the independence of the judiciary, and protecting the constitutional fabric of our beloved nation,” they emphasized.
The statement ends with a strong call to action: “We cannot afford to ignore the repetition of these dangerous patterns. The time to act is now.”
