The Management of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) has announced plans to revitalize the struggling state-owned transport company, which has been grappling with a severe operational crisis.
Years of neglect have left most of its buses grounded, drastically reducing its fleet and hindering its ability to serve commuters effectively.
Established in 2002 under President John Agyekum Kufuor, the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) was designed to provide affordable, accessible, and efficient transportation, particularly in urban areas.
However, what was once Ghana’s largest public transport network is now struggling to stay afloat.
From an initial fleet of nearly 1,000 buses, only about 140 remain operational due to a severe shortage of spare parts and poor working conditions for staff.
At a recent staff engagement in Kumasi, the Managing Director of MMT, Kale Cesar, outlined plans to revive the struggling company.
“The company has a huge potential to top the transport system in the country but for one or two reasons, the company has dwindled so low. However, we have put in place some measures to revive it. We intend improving on our infrastructure and getting new fleet of electric buses soon,” he said.
The MD assured workers and commuters that these measures would restore MMT’s position as a reliable public transport provider.
“We have so many areas in this country which are underserved when it comes to road transport system and we believe that it is the Metro Mass that can bring transportation to the doorstep to every community”, Mr Cesar emphasized.
With these promises in motion, the question remains, will it be enough to bring Metro Mass Transit back from the brink? Time will tell.
