Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has commenced discussions with private labour exporters, SOS Labour Ghana to enhance the Work Abroad Model introduced by the government.
At a meeting in Accra with executives from SOS Labour Ghana on April 28, 2025 YEA’s Chief Executive Officer, Malik Basintale, emphasised YEA’s commitment to partner agencies with similar objectives to support the Work Abroad initiative.
Malik Basintale expressed optimism about the partnership with SOS Ghana while commending the agency for their past achievements.
He believes that SOS Ghana together with the YEA has what it takes to ensure that the President’s ‘Work Abroad’ initiative is manifested.
“We are willing to work with you and partner. His Excellency the President has made the Work Abroad one of his pivotal legacies he wants to leave behind.
“Our doors are opened and we have met all requirements with regards to this. We are single-handedly mandated to do this with the full blessing of His Excellency the President.
“And so SOS, we welcome you, we are willing to work with you and at the end of the day, we will be seeing people off at the airport,” he said.
The CEO outlined the vision behind the initiative, noting that the ‘Work Abroad’ model seeks to address the issue of brain drain by creating a proper channel where Ghanaian labour could migrate in a very serene and coordinate manner and acquire skills abroad and eventually return to inculcate their expertise in the Ghanaian economy.
SOS Unveils JDM
In response, the Chief Executive Officer of SOS Labour Ghana, Rev. Dr. Princess Asie Ocansey, revealed that the organization had developed a special program titled JDM – Jobs for Development Migration, named after President John Dramani Mahama’s initials.
“It is wonderful that the door is open once again, and we are bringing something extra.
“It is a programme that we have named after the initials of His Excellency the President called JDM, that is Jobs for Development Migration,” she announced.
She explained that the JDM program focuses not only on securing overseas employment but also on building lasting economic ties back home through a novel housing scheme.
Workers sent abroad under the program will benefit from free food, accommodation, transportation, and crucially, access to “no money down,” mortgages to be paying the mortgages in installment as they work.
“The housing program is particularly exciting because it brings remittances home,” Rev. Dr. Ocansey highlighted.
