The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to remain steadfast in its campaign against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, regardless of any changes in government.
Speaking during an interaction with former UTAG National Chairman, Dr. Harry Agbanu, in Accra, the Minister commended the Association’s national leadership for their unwavering stance on the issue.
“I want to particularly thank UTAG for the principled decision you have taken to fight galamsey. Don’t let a change in government weaken your resolve or determination to demand accountability and decisive action from the state,” he said on April 28.
Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the importance of sustained advocacy, urging UTAG not to relent in its efforts.
“Keep up the advocacy. Don’t give up simply because there is a new government. You believe it is wrong—and it is. So, continue the fight,” he added.
The Minister condemned the destructive impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment and economy, describing the situation as deeply troubling.
“It was wrong yesterday, and it is still wrong today. We cannot build a society that fails to protect its water bodies and livelihood particularly when this matter is affecting cocoa sector which is the bone and strength of our national economy by way of foreign exchange earnings and in support to farmers,” he said.
It is recalled that in the run up to the 2024 elections, UTAG declared a strike action to back its demand for firm actions against galamsey. They backed down due to assurances from the then government.
